![]() I know she went through so much and I just, her humanitarian work, I just want to salute that and say that not everybody does that. When I got to meet her, she was just as nice as she was a star and talented. Then I got to meet her later when we performed together. Grease was probably the first movie I ever saw. I want to give thanks for a moment here, that she really affected my life, like, as a little girl, I loved her so much growing up. I am here because I’m a friend and fan Olivia Newton-John. When many picked up a California drawl the first time they touch down at LAX, her Aussie accent got a little bit stronger every day and didn’t we love her for that. So, to be able to pay tribute to her tonight is incredibly important to all of us. I was like, “I want to be Olivia Newton-John”. I would perform her songs at school, I remember when I first saw Grease. I considered her a great friend as well as a fellow entertainer. Now, I had the honour of singing with her several times. The world lost one of its greatest talents when Olivia left us. It just wasn’t as good or funny as the stage version. Producer Allan Carr wasn’t exactly overjoyed over the dialogue change, he added, but Thurm blamed him for “screwing up” the dialogue. And thankfully, Olivia liked it too because we had no backup for the role. Olivia was perfect for the role, as we all already knew. ![]() But by the time we were looking at it in a screening room, Paramount executives already saw it and were thrilled. They looked it over, and in the next take, the crew was roaring with laughter. So I gave the play dialogue instead to John and Olivia. I said, ‘Here’s why it’s not working.’ The movie dialogue was all changed. “I immediately pulled out from my back pocket a copy of the original Grease musical that was running in New York,” he wrote. I’m thinking, ‘Oh God, if she thinks it’s her fault that nobody’s laughing, what’s going to happen?’” At this point, I’m getting really worried. This is a full movie crew on a sound stage. “The first take, there was no laughing from the crew,” Thurm recalled. THE KOOK: Kitsch is the keyword here - the pink ladies from Grease would surely agree. ![]()
